Mosaic is made up of individual pieces of material such as glass, stone or tile arranged together to a surface that adds pigment and patterns. It's a unique art form, and one which can produce incredible results.
Mosaics have a long history, starting in Mesopotamia in the 3rd millennium BC. Pebble mosaics were made, mosaics with patterns and pictures became widespread in classical times both in Ancient Greece and Ancient Rome.
From what we can tell, mosaics were a symbol of wealth, since they were so complex and so time-consuming to install but the installation technique has deeply improved during the centuries and it is now easy and quickly, thanks to the textiles meshes where pieces are fixed on.
Here some historical reference from St. Peter's church in Rome and some of our contemporary collections.
